World Day for Assistive Technology: Advancing Access and Inclusion for All 4 June 2026

CBR Africa Network (CAN) joins the global community in commemorating World Day for Assistive Technology, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role of assistive technology in enabling persons with disabilities and others with functional limitations to participate fully in society.

According to global estimates, more than 2.5 billion people require one or more assistive products. These include wheelchairs, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, spectacles, communication aids, and other technologies that support independent living and participation in education, employment, and community life.

Despite the growing need, access remains highly unequal. Only 10% of people in low-income countries have access to the assistive technology they require, compared to 90% in high-income countries.

This significant disparity highlights the urgent need for increased investment, stronger policies, improved service delivery systems, and enhanced awareness to ensure equitable access to assistive technology.

At CBR Africa Network, we recognize that assistive technology is not merely a health intervention—it is a catalyst for inclusion, dignity, empowerment, and the realization of human rights.

As we mark this important day, we call upon governments, development partners, organizations of persons with disabilities, service providers, and communities to work together to expand access to affordable, quality, and appropriate assistive technology across Africa.

Together, we can create a future where everyone has the tools they need to live independently, participate fully, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Access to Assistive Technology is a Human Right. Let’s make it a reality for all.
