Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) have asked Uganda government to review the Shs3 million nomination fee for elective positions, saying the cost is discriminatory and shuts capable leaders out of national decision-making.

During an engagement with PWDs in Kampala ahead of her campaign launch, Hellen Grace Asamo, a Member of Parliament aspirant for the PWDs’ seat, said the fee undermines political inclusion and contradicts the country’s commitments to empower marginalized groups.  She said revising the charge should be among the first priorities of the next Parliament.

“The Shs3 million nomination fee is too high for most people with disabilities and it is a direct barrier that prevents many competent and passionate PWDs from participating in national leadership and decision-making.” said Asamo, who is also the Minister of State for PWD’s.
