SYNOPSIS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
WEALTH CREATION PROGRAMMES: A KEY TO SOCIAL ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.
According to UBOS (2024), 13.2 percent of Uganda’s population aged 2 years and above live with some form of disability and, this comes with unique individual and social histories and exclusion which act as barriers to accessing livelihoods and employment.
Also, UBOS (2025), the Persons Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) percentage of youths with disabilities (18-30 years) in Uganda stood out higher at 56.6%. This indicates that more than half of young persons with disabilities are excluded from the key areas of education, employment, and training, a critical concern for inclusive development and social equity.
Additionally, regional variations show that Kampala Capital City had the lowest proportion of youth NEET (40%) perhaps due to her city status. The figure below indicates the NEET by impairment.
